FreeBSD up to 10.1 routed Daemon input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in FreeBSD up to 10.1 (Operating System). It has been declared as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown function of the component routed Daemon. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:

routed in FreeBSD 8.4 through 10.1-RC2 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (assertion failure and daemon exit) via an RIP request from a source not on a directly connected network.

The weakness was disclosed 10/21/2014 by Hiroki Sato as FreeBSD-SA-14:21.routed as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at security.FreeBSD.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2014-3955 since 06/03/2014. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The advisory points out:

The input path in routed(8) will accept queries from any source and attempt to answer them. However, the output path assumes that the destination address for the response is on a directly connected network.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 92909 (FreeBSD : FreeBSD -- routed(8) remote denial of service vulnerability (734233f4-6007-11e6-a6c3-14dae9d210b8)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks. The advisory illustrates:

Upon receipt of a query from a source which is not on a directly connected network, routed(8) will trigger an assertion and terminate. The affected system's routing table will no longer be updated. If the affected system is a router, its routes will eventually expire from other routers' routing tables, and its networks will no longer be reachable unless they are also connected to another router.

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. The advisory contains the following remark:

Use a packet filter such as pf(4) or ipfw(4) to block incoming UDP packets with destination port 520 that did not originate on the same subnet as the destination address.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (97721), Tenable (92909), SecurityFocus (BID 70693†), Secunia (SA61865†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1031099†). The entries VDB-68048 and VDB-68046 are pretty similar. Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
