VMware vSphere Data Protection up to 5.5.6 Java API Password access control

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in VMware vSphere Data Protection up to 5.5.6 (Virtualization Software). This affects some unknown functionality of the component Java API. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a access control vulnerability (Password). CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-264. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:

EMC Avamar Data Store (ADS) and Avamar Virtual Edition (AVE) 6.x and 7.0.x through 7.0.2-43 do not require authentication for Java API calls, which allows remote attackers to discover grid MCUser and GSAN passwords via a crafted call.

The weakness was shared 10/22/2014 by Jakub Mleczko (poland) as VMSA-2014-0011 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at vmware.com. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2014-4624 since 06/24/2014. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue. The advisory points out:

VMware vSphere Data Protection (VDP) contains a vulnerability that may allow a remote user to retrieve sensitive account credentials from the affected VDP server using Java API calls. No authentication to the VDP server is required for this potential attack. Exposed information includes MCUser and GSAN account passwords of all grid systems that are being monitored in VPD Enterprise Manager.

Upgrading to version 5.5.7 or 5.8 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at my.vmware.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (97729), SecurityFocus (BID 70709†), Secunia (SA61663†), SecurityTracker (ID 1031114†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-47438†). Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
