Linux Kernel on VMX Intel resource management

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability described as problematic has been identified in Linux Kernel on VMX Intel. The affected element is an unknown function. The manipulation results in resource management. This vulnerability is reported as CVE-2014-3690. No exploit exists. It is advisable to implement a patch to correct this issue.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in Linux Kernel on VMX Intel (Operating System) (unknown version). Affected is an unknown code block. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a resource management vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-399. This is going to have an impact on availability.

The weakness was disclosed 10/21/2014 by Andy Lutomirski as confirmed mailinglist post (oss-sec). The advisory is shared for download at seclists.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2014-3690 since 05/14/2014. The exploitability is told to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The advisory points out:

KVM has a bug that allows malicious host user code that can open the /dev/kvm device on a VMX (Intel) machine to DoS the system. (In my proof of concept, the DoS is a rather spectacular failure of the whole system, although I haven't checked whether the kernel panics. A more refined exploit *might* be able to kill targetted user processes, but it would be tricky and is subject to possibly unavoidable races that are likely to take down the whole system.)

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 79435 (Ubuntu 14.04 LTS : linux vulnerabilities (USN-2420-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Ubuntu Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115150 (Red Hat Update for kernel (RHSA-2015:0782)).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (97715), Tenable (79435), SecurityFocus (BID 70691†), Secunia (SA60174†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-47906†). Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
