Linux Kernel up to 3.11.7 Nested INVEPT input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in Linux Kernel up to 3.11.7. Affected is an unknown function of the component Nested INVEPT Handler. Performing a manipulation results in input validation. This vulnerability is reported as CVE-2014-3645. No exploit exists. To fix this issue, it is recommended to deploy a patch.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in Linux Kernel up to 3.11.7 (Operating System). This affects some unknown processing of the component Nested INVEPT Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. This is going to have an impact on availability. The summary by CVE is:

arch/x86/kvm/vmx.c in the KVM subsystem in the Linux kernel before 3.12 does not have an exit handler for the INVEPT instruction, which allows guest OS users to cause a denial of service (guest OS crash) via a crafted application.

The weakness was disclosed 10/24/2014 with Intel Advanced Threat Research Team as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). It is possible to read the advisory at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2014-3645 since 05/14/2014. The exploitability is told to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The advisory points out:

On systems with invept instruction support (corresponding bit in IA32_VMX_EPT_VPID_CAP MSR is set) guest invocation of invept causes vm exit, which is currently not handled and causes unknown exit error to be propagated to userspace.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 78702 (CentOS 7 : kernel (CESA-2014:1724)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115151 (Red Hat Update for kernel (RHSA-2015:0284)).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (97772), Tenable (78702), SecurityFocus (BID 70746†), SecurityTracker (ID 1031201†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-47111†). The entries VDB-68068 and VDB-68069 are pretty similar. Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
