Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 3.3.5 (Operating System). It has been declared as problematic. This vulnerability affects an unknown part of the component Virtual File System. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a resource management vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-399. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:
The d_walk function in fs/dcache.c in the Linux kernel through 3.17.2 does not properly maintain the semantics of rename_lock, which allows local users to cause a denial of service (deadlock and system hang) via a crafted application.
The weakness was disclosed 10/30/2014 by Sasha Levin as Bug 1159313 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared for download at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2014-8559 since 10/30/2014. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 81449 (Debian DSA-3170-1 : linux - security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 195971 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Linux Vulnerabilities (USN-2492-1)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at lkml.org.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (98424), Tenable (81449), SecurityFocus (BID 70854†), Secunia (SA62801†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1034051†). Additional details are provided at seclists.org. The entries VDB-68462, VDB-68485, VDB-68574 and VDB-69020 are pretty similar. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
