A vulnerability was found in Adobe Shockwave Player 11.6.7.637 (Multimedia Player Software). It has been declared as critical. The public release was coordinated with Adobe. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2012-4173 since 08/07/2012. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 62702 (Shockwave Player <= 11.6.7.637 Multiple Vulnerabilities (APSB12-23)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 120615 (Adobe Shockwave Player Multiple Vulnerabilities (APSB12-23)).
Upgrading to version 11.6.8.638 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at get.adobe.com. The problem might be mitigated by replacing the product with Microsoft Silverlight, Java or Javascript as an alternative. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
