A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Microsoft Word 2007 (Word Processing Software). This affects an unknown function of the component File Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
The weakness was disclosed 11/11/2014 by Ben Hawkes with Google Project Zero as MS14-069 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). It is possible to read the advisory at technet.microsoft.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2014-6334 since 09/11/2014. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1059 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 79129 (MS14-069: Vulnerabilities in Microsoft Office Could Allow Remote Code Execution (3009710)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 110242 (Microsoft Office Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS14-069)).
Applying the patch MS14-069 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 16953.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (98373), Tenable (79129), SecurityFocus (BID 70962†), Secunia (SA59867†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1031189†).
