Apple Mac OS X up to 10.3.4 Terminal URL denial of service

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Apple Mac OS X up to 10.3.4 (Operating System). It has been declared as problematic. This vulnerability affects an unknown part of the component Terminal URL Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a denial of service vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-404. The product does not release or incorrectly releases a resource before it is made available for re-use. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:

FreeBSD 5.1 and earlier, and Mac OS X before 10.3.4, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (resource exhaustion of memory buffers and system crash) via a large number of out-of-sequence TCP packets, which prevents the operating system from creating new connections.

The bug was discovered 01/22/2004. The weakness was disclosed 05/30/2004 by David Brown with vtty.com (Website). The advisory is available at docs.info.apple.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2004-0171. Local access is required to approach this attack. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 41 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 12257 (Mac OS X < 10.3.4 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks and running in the context c.

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at apple.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (15369), Tenable (12257), SecurityFocus (BID 10432†), OSVDB (4124†) and Secunia (SA11724†). Additional details are provided at docs.info.apple.com. The entries VDB-75, VDB-300, VDB-526 and VDB-543 are pretty similar. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
