The dissect_write_structured_field function in epan/dissectors/packet-tn5250.c in the TN5250 dissector in Wireshark 1.10.x before 1.10.11 and 1.12.x before 1.12.2 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (infinite loop) via a crafted packet.
The weakness was presented 11/12/2014 as wnpa-sec-2014-23 as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at wireshark.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2014-8714 since 11/09/2014. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 83002 (Debian DLA-198-1 : wireshark security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350122 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for wireshark: ALAS-2015-580).
Upgrading to version 1.10.11 or 1.12.2 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
