Drupal 7.33 Password Hashing API input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability has been found in Drupal 7.33 and classified as problematic. This impacts an unknown function of the component Password Hashing API. Performing a manipulation results in input validation. This vulnerability was named CVE-2014-9016. In addition, an exploit is available. The affected component should be upgraded.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Drupal 7.33 (Content Management System). It has been classified as problematic. This affects an unknown part of the component Password Hashing API. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. This is going to have an impact on availability. The summary by CVE is:

The password hashing API in Drupal 7.x before 7.34 and the Secure Password Hashes (aka phpass) module 6.x-2.x before 6.x-2.1 for Drupal allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (CPU and memory consumption) via a crafted request.

The weakness was presented 11/19/2014 by Michael Cullum, Javier Nieto and Andrés Rojas Guerrero as DRUPAL-SA-CORE-2014-006 as confirmed security advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at drupal.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2014-9016 since 11/20/2014. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The advisory points out:

Drupal 7 includes a password hashing API to ensure that user supplied passwords are not stored in plain text. A vulnerability in this API allows an attacker to send specially crafted requests resulting in CPU and memory exhaustion. This may lead to the site becoming unavailable or unresponsive (denial of service).

The exploit is shared for download at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 79679 (Fedora 20 : drupal7-7.34-1.fc20 (2014-15528)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 13074 (Drupal Core Password Hashing API Denial of Service Vulnerability (SA-CORE-2014-006)). The advisory illustrates:

If you have configured a custom session.inc file for your Drupal 6 or Drupal 7 site you also need to make sure that it is not prone to the same session hijacking vulnerability disclosed in this security advisory. If you have configured a custom password.inc file for your Drupal 7 site you also need to make sure that it is not prone to the same denial of service vulnerability disclosed in this security advisory.

Upgrading to version 6.x or 7.34 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (98861), Exploit-DB (35415), Tenable (79679), SecurityFocus (BID 71195†) and Secunia (SA59164†). Further details are available at seclists.org. See VDB-68252 for similar entry. Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
