Details
A vulnerability was found in Digium Asterisk 12.7.0/13.0.0 (Communications System) and classified as problematic. This issue affects an unknown code of the component res_pjsip_refer Module. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. Impacted is availability.
The weakness was released 11/20/2014 by Joshua Colp as AST-2014-016 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at downloads.asterisk.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2014-8416 since 10/22/2014. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. The advisory points out:
When handling an INVITE with Replaces message the res_pjsip_refer module incorrectly assumes that it will be operating on a channel that has just been created. If the INVITE with Replaces message is sent in-dialog after a session has been established this assumption will be incorrect. The res_pjsip_refer module will then hang up a channel that is actually owned by another thread. When this other thread attempts to use the just hung up channel it will end up using freed channel which will likely cause a crash.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 3 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 79439 (Asterisk PJSIP Multiple Vulnerabilities (AST-2014-013 / AST-2014-015 / AST-2014-016)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Misc..
Upgrading to version 12.7.1 or 13.0.1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. The advisory contains the following remark:
If REFER support is not required the res_pjsip_refer module can be unloaded to limit exposure otherwise the res_pjsip_refer module has been patched so it will not allow an in-dialog INVITE with Replaces message to be processed.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (98867), Tenable (79439), SecurityFocus (BID 71224†), SecurityTracker (ID 1031249†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-47583†). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at VDB-68258 and VDB-68260. If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
