Dell SonicWall GMS Virtual Appliance 7.2 GMS ViewPoint Web Application input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in Dell SonicWall GMS Virtual Appliance 7.2 (Firewall Software) and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown function of the component GMS ViewPoint Web Application. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

The ViewPoint web application in Dell SonicWALL Global Management System (GMS) before 7.2 SP2, SonicWALL Analyzer before 7.2 SP2, and SonicWALL UMA before 7.2 SP2 allows remote authenticated users to execute arbitrary code via unspecified vectors.

The weakness was presented 11/21/2014 by Brandon Perry as ZDI-14-385 as confirmed advisory (ZDI). The advisory is available at zerodayinitiative.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2014-8420 since 10/22/2014. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. The successful exploitation requires a single authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. The advisory points out:

GMS, Analyzer, and UMA have remote code execution vulnerabilities. These vulnerabilities are exploitable only by the user who has access to the privileged login for the administrative/appliance interface to GMS.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 123 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k.

Applying the patch Hotfix #153315 is able to eliminate this problem.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (98911) and SecurityFocus (BID 71241†). Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
