Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Foundation Xen up to 4.4.1 on x86 (Virtualization Software) and classified as problematic. This issue affects an unknown code block of the component REP MOVS Acceleration Support. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-17. Impacted is availability.
The weakness was disclosed 11/27/2014 by Jan Beulich with SuSE as XSA-112 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at xenbits.xen.org. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with Linux Foundation. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2014-8867 since 11/14/2014. The exploitation is known to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. The advisory points out:
Acceleration support for the "REP MOVS" instruction, when the first iteration accesses memory mapped I/O emulated internally in the hypervisor, incorrectly assumes that the whole range accessed is handled by the same hypervisor sub-component.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 82621 (CentOS 5 : kernel (CESA-2015:0783)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 370031 (Citrix XenServer Security Update (CTX200288)).
Applying the patch xsa112.patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at xenbits.xen.org. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (99019), Tenable (82621), SecurityFocus (BID 71331†), Secunia (SA59949†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1031274†). The entries VDB-12078, VDB-68222 and VDB-68296 are pretty similar. If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
