Details
A vulnerability was found in Mozilla Firefox 33.0 (Web Browser). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects some unknown functionality of the component XBL Binding. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a access control vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-284. The product does not restrict or incorrectly restricts access to a resource from an unauthorized actor. As an impact it is known to affect integrity. CVE summarizes:
Mozilla Firefox before 34.0 and SeaMonkey before 2.31 provide stylesheets with an incorrect primary namespace, which allows remote attackers to bypass intended access restrictions via an XBL binding.
The weakness was presented 12/02/2014 by Cody Crews as mfsa2014-84 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at mozilla.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2014-1589 since 01/16/2014. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1068. The advisory points out:
Security researcher Cody Crews reported a method to trigger chrome level XML Binding Language (XBL) bindings through web content. This was possible because some chrome accessible CSS stylesheets had their primary namespace improperly declared. When this occurred, it was possible to use these stylesheets to manipulate XBL bindings, allowing web content to bypass security restrictions. This issue was limited to a specific set of stylesheets.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 79707 (FreeBSD : mozilla -- multiple vulnerabilities (7ae61870-9dd2-4884-a2f2-f19bb5784d09)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 195686 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Firefox Vulnerabilities (USN-2424-1)).
Upgrading to version 34 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (99061), Tenable (79707), SecurityFocus (BID 71393†), SecurityTracker (ID 1031286†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-47383†). Additional details are provided at bugzilla.mozilla.org. See VDB-68306, VDB-68307, VDB-68309 and VDB-68310 for similar entries. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
