CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in FFmpeg 2.3.3 (Multimedia Processing Software). This issue affects an unknown functionality. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:

libavcodec/gifdec.c in FFmpeg before 2.4.2 does not properly compute image heights, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (out-of-bounds access) or possibly have unspecified other impact via crafted GIF data.

The issue has been introduced in 08/17/2014. The weakness was released 10/30/2014 by Mateusz Jurczyk and Gynvael Coldwind (j00ru) with Google Security Team as avcodec/gifdec: factorize interleave end handling out as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). The advisory is shared at git.videolan.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2014-8547 since 10/30/2014. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 74 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 81833 (Debian DSA-3189-1 : libav - security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 196036 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Libav Vulnerabilities (USN-2534-1)).

Upgrading to version 2.4.2 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.videolan.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (99079), Tenable (81833), SecurityFocus (BID 70884†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-49726†).
