The weakness was disclosed 12/09/2014 by Alex Inführ with Cure53 as APSB14-28 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at helpx.adobe.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2014-8452 since 10/22/2014. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1592 for this issue.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 83473 (Adobe Reader < 10.1.14 / 11.0.11 Multiple Vulnerabilities (APSB15-10)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 123579 (Adobe Reader and Acrobat Multiple Vulnerabilities (APSB15-10)).

Upgrading to version 10.1.13 or 11.0.10 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 19249.
