The issue has been introduced in 03/22/2001. The weakness was disclosed 12/09/2014 by SkyLined with Microsoft as MS14-080 as confirmed bulletin (Technet) via iDefense. The advisory is shared for download at technet.microsoft.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2014-6363 since 09/11/2014. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 5010 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 79833 (MS14-084: Vulnerability in VBScript Scripting Engine Could Allow Remote Code Execution (3016711)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 100218 (Microsoft Internet Explorer Cumulative Security Update (MS14-080)).

Applying the patch MS14-080 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 17135.
