Microsoft Excel 2007 SP3, Excel 2010 SP2, and Office Compatibility Pack allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted Office document, aka "Global Free Remote Code Execution in Excel Vulnerability."

The weakness was disclosed 12/09/2014 with Microsoft as MS14-083 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). It is possible to read the advisory at technet.microsoft.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2014-6360 since 09/11/2014. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1059 according to MITRE ATT&CK.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 79832 (MS14-083: Vulnerabilities in Microsoft Excel Could Allow Remote Code Execution (3017347)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 110245 (Microsoft Excel Remote Code Execution Vulnerabilities (MS14-083)).

Applying the patch MS14-083 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 17132.
