CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Digium Asterisk 11.x/12.x/13.x (Communications System). It has been classified as problematic. This affects an unknown code of the component WebSocket. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a double free vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-415. The product calls free() twice on the same memory address, potentially leading to modification of unexpected memory locations. This is going to have an impact on availability.

The weakness was published 12/10/2014 by Badalian Vyacheslav as AST-2014-019 as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at downloads.digium.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2014-9374 since 12/11/2014. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The advisory points out:

When handling a WebSocket frame the res_http_websocket module dynamically changes the size of the memory used to allow the provided payload to fit. If a payload length of zero was received the code would incorrectly attempt to resize to zero. This operation would succeed and end up freeing the memory but be treated as a failure. When the session was subsequently torn down this memory would get freed yet again causing a crash.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 41 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 80036 (Asterisk 'res_http_websocket' Double-Free DoS (AST-2014-019)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Misc..

Upgrading to version 11.14.2, 12.7.2, 13.0.2 or 11.6-cert9 eliminates this vulnerability. The advisory contains the following remark:

Ensure the built-in HTTP server is disabled, upgrade to a version listed below, or apply the applicable patch. The change ensures that res_http_websocket does not treat the freeing of memory when a payload length of zero is received as fatal.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (80036), SecurityFocus (BID 71607†), Secunia (SA60251†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1031345†). Similar entry is available at VDB-68492. Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
