Details
A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in MIT Kerberos 5-1.13 (Network Authentication Software). Affected is the function krb5_ldap_get_password_policy_from_dn of the component Named Ticket Policy Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. This is going to have an impact on availability. SecurityTracker mentions: "Systems with kadmind configured to use LDAP for the KDC database are affected."
The weakness was released 12/16/2014 by Patrik Kis (Website). The advisory is shared for download at web.mit.edu. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2014-5353 since 08/19/2014. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. A authentication is needed for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 81965 (openSUSE Security Update : krb5 (openSUSE-2015-246)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 196000 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Krb5 Vulnerabilities (USN-2498-1)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at github.com.
