A vulnerability was found in IBM DB 9.5/9.7/9.8/10.1/10.5 and classified as problematic. This issue affects some unknown functionality of the component XML Query Handler. IBM DB2 9.5 through FP10, 9.7 through FP10, 9.8 through FP5, 10.1 through FP4, and 10.5 before FP5 allows remote authenticated users to cause a denial of service (CPU consumption) via a crafted XML query.
The weakness was released 12/15/2014 by Danny Tsechansky with McAfee as Reference #1692358 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at www-01.ibm.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2014-8901 since 11/14/2014. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. A simple authentication is required for exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 82824 (IBM DB2 10.5 < Fix Pack 5 Multiple DoS Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Databases and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 19986 (IBM DB2 Multiple Vulnerabilities (swg21633303)).
Applying the patch 10.5 Fix Pack 5 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at ibm.com. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
