A vulnerability was found in NTP Daemon up to 4.2.7 (Network Management Software). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects the function crypto_recv. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. The weakness was disclosed 11/03/2014 by Stephen Roettger with Google Security Team as Sec 2667 as confirmed bug report (Bug Tracker). The advisory is shared for download at bugs.ntp.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2014-9295 since 12/05/2014. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 03/01/2022). This vulnerability has a historic impact due to its background and reception. The advisory points out:

When Autokey Authentication is enabled (i.e. the ntp.conf file contains a crypto pw ... directive) a remote attacker can send a carefully crafted packet that can overflow a stack buffer and potentially allow malicious code to be executed with the privilege level of the ntpd process.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 80217 (SuSE 11.3 Security Update : ntp (SAT Patch Number 10117)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 185097 (HP-UX Running NTP Multiple Vulnerabilities (HPSBUX03240)).

Upgrading to version 4.2.8 eliminates this vulnerability. It is possible to mitigate the problem by applying the configuration setting Disable Autokey Authentication. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
