Details
A vulnerability was found in KDE Konqueror 4.7.3 (Web Browser). It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is some unknown functionality of the file khtml/rendering/render_replaced.cpp of the component Iframe Context Menu Widget Renderer. The manipulation with the input value document.body.innerHTML = "<iframe src=about:konqueror></iframe>" leads to a resource management vulnerability. Use-after-free vulnerability in khtml/rendering/render_replaced.cpp in Konqueror in KDE 4.7.3, when the context menu is shown, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code by accessing an iframe when it is being updated.
The weakness was presented 10/10/2012 by Tim Brown with Nth Dimension as NDSA20121010 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at nth-dimension.org.uk. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2012-4515 since 08/21/2012. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. By accessing the context menu for a given iframe whilst the iframe is being updated by the parent can lead to attempts to access no- onger existing objects.
A public exploit has been developed by Tim Brown in HTML/Javascript and been published immediately after the advisory. The exploit is available at nth-dimension.org.uk. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 864868 , which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 166215 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for kdelibs4 (SUSE-SU-2013:1559-1)).
Applying the patch Revision 4f2eb356 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at projects.kde.org. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
