Summaryinfo

A vulnerability described as critical has been identified in Mozilla Firefox 34.0.5. This affects an unknown part. The manipulation results in memory corruption. This vulnerability was named CVE-2014-8635. The attack may be performed from remote. There is no available exploit. Upgrading the affected component is recommended.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Mozilla Firefox 34.0.5 (Web Browser). Affected is an unknown code block. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability.

The weakness was presented 01/13/2015 by Christoph Diehl, Christian Holler, Gary Kwong, Jesse Ruderman, Byron Campen, Terrence Cole and Nils Ohlmeier as MFSA2015-01 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at mozilla.org. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2014-8635 since 11/06/2014. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. The advisory points out:

Mozilla developers and community identified and fixed several memory safety bugs in the browser engine used in Firefox and other Mozilla-based products. Some of these bugs showed evidence of memory corruption under certain circumstances, and we presume that with enough effort at least some of these could be exploited to run arbitrary code.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 80538 (FreeBSD : mozilla -- multiple vulnerabilities (bd62c640-9bb9-11e4-a5ad-000c297fb80f)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 167588 (OpenSuSE Security Update for seamonkey (openSUSE-SU-2015:0192-1)). The advisory illustrates:

In general these flaws cannot be exploited through email in the Thunderbird product because scripting is disabled, but are potentially a risk in browser or browser-like contexts.

Upgrading to version 35 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (99956), Tenable (80538), SecurityFocus (BID 72050†), Secunia (SA62242†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1031533†).
