Apple Mac OS X 10.10/10.10.1 Bluetooth memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Apple Mac OS X 10.10/10.10.1 (Operating System). Affected by this issue is an unknown code of the component Bluetooth. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Multiple unspecified vulnerabilities in the Bluetooth driver in Apple OS X before 10.10.2 allow attackers to execute arbitrary code in a privileged context via a crafted app.

The weakness was published 01/27/2015 by Roberto Paleari and Aristide Fattori (PanguTeam) with Emaze Networks as HT204244 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at support.apple.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2014-8837 since 11/14/2014. The attack needs to be initiated within the local network. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. The advisory points out:

Multiple security issues existed in the Bluetooth driver, allowing a malicious application to execute arbitrary code with system privilege. The issues were addressed through additional input validation.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 81087 (Mac OS X 10.10.x < 10.10.2 Multiple Vulnerabilities (POODLE)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 123193 (Apple Mac OS X v10.10.2 and Security Update 2015-001 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2015-01-27-4)).

Upgrading to version 10.10.2 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
