This vulnerability is known as CVE-2014-4489 since 06/20/2014. Attacking locally is a requirement. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1068 according to MITRE ATT&CK. The advisory points out:

A null pointer dereference existed in IOHIDFamily's handling of event queues. This issue was addressed through improved validation of IOHIDFamily event queue initialization.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 81145 (Apple TV < 7.0.3 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Misc.. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 123193 (Apple Mac OS X v10.10.2 and Security Update 2015-001 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2015-01-27-4)).

Upgrading to version 10.10.2 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
