LaunchServices in Apple OS X before 10.10.2 does not properly handle file-type metadata, which allows attackers to bypass the Gatekeeper protection mechanism via a crafted JAR archive.
The weakness was released 01/27/2015 by Hernan Ochoa with Amplia Security as HT204244 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at support.apple.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2014-8826 since 11/14/2014. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The advisory points out:
An issue existed in the handling of application launches which allowed certain malicious JAR files to bypass Gatekeeper checks. This issue was addressed through improved handling of file type metadata.
A public exploit has been developed by Amplia Security Research and been published 2 days after the advisory. The exploit is shared for download at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 81087 (Mac OS X 10.10.x < 10.10.2 Multiple Vulnerabilities (POODLE)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 123193 (Apple Mac OS X v10.10.2 and Security Update 2015-001 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2015-01-27-4)).
Upgrading to version 10.10.2 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
