A vulnerability was found in ClamAV Antivirus up to 0.98.5 (Anti-Malware Software). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects an unknown functionality of the component Mew Packer File Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The weakness was presented 01/27/2015 by Felix Groebert (evad3rs) with Google Security Team as ClamAV® blog: ClamAV 0.98.6 has been released! as confirmed release notes (Mailing List). The advisory is shared at lists.clamav.net. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2014-9328 since 12/07/2014. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 81674 (Amazon Linux AMI : clamav (ALAS-2015-486)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Amazon Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 167564 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security update for clamav (SUSE-SU-2015:0298-1)).
Upgrading to version 0.98.6 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at clamav.net. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
