Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in AVM FRITZ!Box 7390/7490 (Router Operating System). This issue affects some unknown processing of the component Signature Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. Impacted is integrity. The summary by CVE is:
Improper Verification of Cryptographic Signature in AVM FRITZ!Box 6810 LTE after firmware 5.22, FRITZ!Box 6840 LTE after firmware 5.23, and other models with firmware 5.50.
The bug was discovered 03/10/2014. The weakness was published 01/21/2015 as rt-sa-2014-010 as not defined advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at redteam-pentesting.de. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2014-8872 since 11/14/2014. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059 for this issue.
A public exploit has been developed in Binary Data and been published immediately after the advisory. The exploit is available at packetstormsecurity.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 183 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k.
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
