Linux Kernel 2.6.38/3.18 rc1 Crypto API access control

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel 2.6.38/3.18 rc1 (Operating System). It has been declared as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown processing of the component Crypto API. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a access control vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-264. As an impact it is known to affect integrity. The summary by CVE is:

The Crypto API in the Linux kernel before 3.18.5 allows local users to load arbitrary kernel modules via a bind system call for an AF_ALG socket with a module name in the salg_name field, a different vulnerability than CVE-2014-9644.

The issue has been introduced in 03/14/2011. The weakness was shared 01/23/2015 by Mathias Krause as confirmed mailinglist post (oss-sec). It is possible to read the advisory at seclists.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2013-7421 since 01/24/2015. The exploitation appears to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1068 according to MITRE ATT&CK.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1411 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 82072 (Ubuntu 14.04 LTS : linux-lts-utopic vulnerabilities (USN-2545-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Ubuntu Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 157067 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Security Update for Unbreakable Enterprise kernel (ELSA-2015-3012)).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (100591), Tenable (82072), SecurityFocus (BID 72322†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-48855†). Additional details are provided at bugzilla.redhat.com. The entries VDB-67366 and VDB-69020 are related to this item.
