A vulnerability was found in MIT Kerberos up to 5-1.13 (Network Authentication Software). It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is the function gss_process_context_token of the component kadmind. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a use after free vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-416. Referencing memory after it has been freed can cause a program to crash, use unexpected values, or execute code. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
The weakness was disclosed 02/03/2015 by Nico Williams as MITKRB5-SA-2015-001 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at web.mit.edu. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2014-5352 since 08/19/2014. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. A single authentication is necessary for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 83269 (Amazon Linux AMI : krb5 (ALAS-2015-518)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Amazon Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350184 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for krb5: ALAS-2015-518).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability.
