A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in FreeType 2.5.3 (Software Library). This issue affects the function Load_SBit_Png function. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
The weakness was disclosed 12/06/2014 by Mateusz Jurczyk (j00ru) with Google as FreeType 2.5.4 as confirmed news (Website). The advisory is shared at freetype.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2014-9665 since 02/07/2015. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 82479 (Debian DLA-185-1 : freetype security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 167708 (OpenSuSE Security Update for freetype2 (openSUSE-SU-2015:0627-1)).
Upgrading to version 2.5.4 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at sourceforge.net. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. The news contains the following remark:
FreeType 2.5.4 has been released. All users should upgrade due to another fix for vulnerability CVE-2014-2240 in the CFF driver. The library also contains a new round of patches for better protection against malformed fonts.
