A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in FreeType 2.5.3 (Software Library). Affected by this issue is the function Mac_Read_POST_Resource. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a integer overflow vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-190. The product performs a calculation that can produce an integer overflow or wraparound, when the logic assumes that the resulting value will always be larger than the original value. This can introduce other weaknesses when the calculation is used for resource management or execution control. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
The weakness was released 12/06/2014 by Mateusz Jurczyk (j00ru) with Google as FreeType 2.5.4 as confirmed news (Website). The advisory is available at freetype.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2014-9674 since 02/07/2015. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Upgrading to version 2.5.4 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at sourceforge.net. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. The news contains the following remark:
FreeType 2.5.4 has been released. All users should upgrade due to another fix for vulnerability CVE-2014-2240 in the CFF driver. The library also contains a new round of patches for better protection against malformed fonts.
