A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Internet Explorer 9/10/11 (Web Browser) and classified as critical. This issue affects an unknown function. The issue has been introduced in 03/16/2010. The weakness was published 02/10/2015 with Zero Day Initiative as MS15-009 as confirmed bulletin (Technet) via ZDI (Zero Day Initiative). The advisory is shared at technet.microsoft.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2015-0038 since 11/18/2014. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1792 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 81262 (MS15-009: Security Update for Internet Explorer (3034682)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 100220 (Microsoft Internet Explorer Cumulative Security Update (MS15-009)).
Applying the patch MS15-009 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 16876.
