The issue has been introduced in 03/05/2008. The weakness was published 02/10/2015 by Omair with Zero Day Initiative as MS15-009 as confirmed bulletin (Technet) via ZDI (Zero Day Initiative). The advisory is available at technet.microsoft.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2015-0043 since 11/18/2014. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2533 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 81262 (MS15-009: Security Update for Internet Explorer (3034682)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 100220 (Microsoft Internet Explorer Cumulative Security Update (MS15-009)).

Applying the patch MS15-009 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
