A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Excel -/2007/2010/2013 (Spreadsheet Software). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects some unknown functionality of the component Object Handler. The weakness was published 02/10/2015 by Fermin J. Serna with Google Security Team as MS15-012 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). It is possible to read the advisory at technet.microsoft.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2015-0063 since 11/18/2014. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 81265 (MS15-012: Vulnerabilities in Microsoft Office Could Allow Remote Code Execution (3032328)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 110249 (Microsoft Office Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS15-012)).
Applying the patch MS15-012 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 19396.
