Microsoft Word 2007 SP3 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (memory corruption) via a crafted Office document, aka "OneTableDocumentStream Remote Code Execution Vulnerability."
The issue has been introduced in 01/30/2007. The weakness was disclosed 02/10/2015 by Ben Hawkes with Google Security Team as MS15-012 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared at technet.microsoft.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2015-0065 since 11/18/2014. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
It is possible to download the exploit at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2933 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 81265 (MS15-012: Vulnerabilities in Microsoft Office Could Allow Remote Code Execution (3032328)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 110249 (Microsoft Office Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS15-012)).
Applying the patch MS15-012 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 19399.
