Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in libvirt up to 1.2.11 (Virtualization Software). This affects the function virDomainSnapshotGetXMLDesc/virDomainSaveImageGetXMLDesc of the component Snapshot Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a information disclosure vulnerability (Password). CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-200. libvirt before 1.2.12 allow remote authenticated users to obtain the VNC password by using the VIR_DOMAIN_XML_SECURE flag with a crafted (1) snapshot to the virDomainSnapshotGetXMLDesc interface or (2) image to the virDomainSaveImageGetXMLDesc interface.
The weakness was disclosed 01/22/2015 by Luyao Huang as LSN-2015-0001 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at security.libvirt.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2015-0236 since 11/18/2014. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. A authentication is necessary for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1592 for this issue.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 81238 (openSUSE Security Update : libvirt (openSUSE-2015-112)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 196366 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Libvirt Vulnerabilities (USN-2867-1)).
