libvirt up to 1.2.11 Snapshot Password information disclosure

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in libvirt up to 1.2.11 (Virtualization Software). This affects the function virDomainSnapshotGetXMLDesc/virDomainSaveImageGetXMLDesc of the component Snapshot Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a information disclosure vulnerability (Password). CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-200. The product exposes sensitive information to an actor that is not explicitly authorized to have access to that information. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:

libvirt before 1.2.12 allow remote authenticated users to obtain the VNC password by using the VIR_DOMAIN_XML_SECURE flag with a crafted (1) snapshot to the virDomainSnapshotGetXMLDesc interface or (2) image to the virDomainSaveImageGetXMLDesc interface.

The weakness was disclosed 01/22/2015 by Luyao Huang as LSN-2015-0001 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at security.libvirt.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2015-0236 since 11/18/2014. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. A authentication is necessary for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1592 for this issue.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 81238 (openSUSE Security Update : libvirt (openSUSE-2015-112)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 196366 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Libvirt Vulnerabilities (USN-2867-1)).

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (100898), Tenable (81238), SecurityFocus (BID 72526†), Secunia (SA62766†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-48704†). The entries VDB-68558, VDB-82386 and VDB-82388 are pretty similar. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
