ISC BIND up to 9.10.2 Trust Anchor Management resource management

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability has been found in ISC BIND and classified as problematic. Affected by this issue is some unknown functionality of the component Trust Anchor Management. The manipulation leads to resource management. This vulnerability is documented as CVE-2015-1349. Additionally, an exploit exists. It is recommended to apply a patch to fix this issue.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in ISC BIND (Domain Name Software). It has been rated as problematic. This issue affects an unknown part of the component Trust Anchor Management. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a resource management vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-399. Impacted is availability.

The weakness was released 02/18/2015 by Jan-Piet Mens as AA-01235 as confirmed knowledge base article (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at kb.isc.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2015-1349 since 01/23/2015. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available. The advisory points out:

BIND servers which are configured to perform DNSSEC validation and which are using managed-keys (which occurs implicitly when using "dnssec-validation auto;" or "dnssec-lookaside auto;") may terminate with an assertion failure when encountering all of the following conditions in a managed trust anchor: a key which was previously trusted is now flagged as revoked; there are no other trusted keys available; there is a standby key, but it is not trusted yet.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 7 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 82539 (F5 Networks BIG-IP : BIND vulnerability (SOL16356)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family F5 Networks Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 185107 (HP-UX Running BIND Remote Denial of Service Vulnerability(HPSBUX03379)). The advisory illustrates:

ISC has demonstrated a proof-of-concept of this attack; however, the complexity of the attack is very high unless the attacker has a specific network relationship to the BIND server which is targeted.

Applying the patch 9.9.6-P2/9.10.1-P2 is able to eliminate this problem. The knowledge base article contains the following remark:

For a workaround, do not use "auto" for the dnssec-validation or dnssec-lookaside options and do not configure a managed-keys statement. In order to do DNSSEC validation with this workaround one would have to configure an explicit trusted-keys statement with the appropriate keys.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (100968), Tenable (82539), SecurityFocus (BID 72673†), SecurityTracker (ID 1031763†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-52628†). rhn.redhat.com is providing further details.
