A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in GNU C Library up to 2.21 (Software Library). Affected by this vulnerability is the function __libc_use_alloca. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect availability.
The weakness was disclosed 02/21/2015 by Florian Weimer as Bug 16618 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). It is possible to read the advisory at sourceware.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2015-1473 since 02/03/2015. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 82149 (Debian DLA-165-1 : eglibc security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350085 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for glibc: ALAS-2015-617).
Upgrading to version 2.21 eliminates this vulnerability.
