Linux Foundation Xen up to 4.5.0 Emulation Routine information disclosure

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Linux Foundation Xen (Virtualization Software). This issue affects some unknown processing of the component Emulation Routine. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a information disclosure vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-200. The product exposes sensitive information to an actor that is not explicitly authorized to have access to that information. Impacted is confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:

The emulation routines for unspecified X86 devices in Xen 3.2.x through 4.5.x does not properly initialize data, which allow local HVM guest users to obtain sensitive information via vectors involving an unsupported access size.

The weakness was disclosed 03/05/2015 by Felix Wilhelm with ERNW as XSA-121 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at xenbits.xen.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2015-2044 since 02/20/2015. The exploitation is known to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1592 for this issue.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 81694 (OracleVM 3.3 : xen (OVMSA-2015-0026)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family OracleVM Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 167942 (OpenSuSE Security Update for xen (openSUSE-SU-2015:1092-1)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (101340), Tenable (81694), SecurityFocus (BID 73015†), SecurityTracker (ID 1031836†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-49261†). The entries VDB-69256, VDB-73930, VDB-73994 and VDB-74496 are pretty similar. If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
