A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in Advantech WebAccess 5.0/6.0/7.0/7.1 (SCADA Software). This affects an unknown function of the file bwocxrun.ocx of the component ActiveX Control. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a information disclosure vulnerability. The BWOCXRUN.BwocxrunCtrl.1 control contains a method named “OpenUrlToBuffer.” This method takes a URL as a parameter and returns its contents to the caller in JavaScript. The URLs are accessed in the security context of the current browser session. The control does not perform any URL validation and allows “file://” URLs that access the local disk. The method can be used to open a URL (including file URLs) and read file URLs through JavaScript. This method could also be used to reach any arbitrary URL to which the browser has access.
The weakness was released 04/12/2014 by Andrea Micalizzi with Zero Day Initiative (Website). The advisory is shared at ics-cert.us-cert.gov. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2014-0771 since 01/02/2014. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1592 for this issue.
The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 122001 (Advantech WebAccess Multiple Vulnerabilities).
Upgrading to version 5.0 eliminates this vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 13453.
