A vulnerability classified as critical was found in PivotX up to 2.3.8. This vulnerability affects an unknown function of the file fileupload.php of the component File Upload. Multiple unrestricted file upload vulnerabilities in fileupload.php in PivotX before 2.3.9 allow remote authenticated users to execute arbitrary PHP code by uploading a file with a (1) .php or (2) .php# extension, and then accessing it via unspecified vectors.
The weakness was presented 04/15/2014 as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is shared for download at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2014-0342 since 12/05/2013. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. By approaching the search of inurl:fileupload.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 12933 (PivotX Multiple Cross-Site Scripting and Arbitrary File Upload Vulnerabilities).
Upgrading to version 2.3.3 eliminates this vulnerability.
