Details
A vulnerability was found in Openfabrics ibutils 1.2-11.2/1.5.7-2. It has been declared as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code block in the library refix/lib/ of the component Privileges. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Untrusted search path vulnerability in a certain Red Hat build script for the ibmssh executable in ibutils packages before ibutils-1.5.7-2.el6 in Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 6 and ibutils-1.2-11.2.el5 in Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 5 allows local users to gain privileges via a Trojan Horse program in refix/lib/, related to an incorrect RPATH setting in the ELF header.
The weakness was released 04/15/2014 by Tomas Hoger as Bug 457935 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2008-3277 since 07/24/2008. An attack has to be approached locally. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1006 for this issue.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 68482 (Oracle Linux 5 : ibutils (ELSA-2012-0311)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 156289 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Update for ibutils (ELSA-2012-0311)).
Upgrading to version 1.5.7-2 eliminates this vulnerability.
