A vulnerability was found in Canonical Ubuntu Linux up to 10.9 (Operating System). It has been declared as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown functionality of the component Update Manager. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a link following vulnerability. The product attempts to access a file based on the filename, but it does not properly prevent that filename from identifying a link or shortcut that resolves to an unintended resource. DistUpgrade/DistUpgradeViewKDE.py in Update Manager before 1:0.87.31.1, 1:0.134.x before 1:0.134.11.1, 1:0.142.x before 1:0.142.23.1, 1:0.150.x before 1:0.150.5.1, and 1:0.152.x before 1:0.152.25.5 does not properly create temporary files, which allows local users to obtain the XAUTHORITY file content for a user via a symlink attack on the temporary file.
The weakness was shared 04/17/2014 by David Black (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at bugs.launchpad.net. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2011-3154 since 08/16/2011. Attacking locally is a requirement. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.

Upgrading to version 10.10 eliminates this vulnerability.
