The HVMOP_pagetable_dying hypercall in Xen 4.0, 4.1, and 4.2 does not properly check the pagetable state when running on shadow pagetables, which allows a local HVM guest OS to cause a denial of service (hypervisor crash) via unspecified vectors.

The weakness was presented 11/13/2012 as msg00004 as confirmed posting (Website). The advisory is shared for download at lists.xen.org. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2012-4538 since 08/21/2012. The attack needs to be approached locally. A authentication is needed for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 63188 (Debian DSA-2582-1 : xen - several vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
