Details
A vulnerability was found in Wdc Arkeia Virtual Appliance up to 10.2.6 and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is some unknown functionality of the component Firmware. The manipulation of the argument Cookie with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Directory traversal vulnerability in opt/arkeia/wui/htdocs/index.php in the WD Arkeia virtual appliance (AVA) with firmware before 10.2.9 allows remote attackers to read arbitrary files and execute arbitrary PHP code via a ..././ (dot dot dot slash dot slash) in the lang Cookie parameter, as demonstrated by a request to login/doLogin.
The weakness was disclosed 04/28/2014 as not defined posting (Bugtraq). The advisory is shared for download at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2014-2846 since 04/10/2014. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1006.
A public exploit has been developed by SEC Consult and been published even before and not after the advisory. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 4 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 74221 (Western Digital Arkeia lang Cookie Crafted Local File Inclusion), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 12941 (Western Digital Arkeia Virtual Appliance Local File Include Vulnerability).
Upgrading to version 10.2.7 eliminates this vulnerability.
