The ServerTrustManager component in the Ignite Realtime Smack XMPP API before 4.0.0-rc1 does not verify basicConstraints and nameConstraints in X.509 certificate chains from SSL servers, which allows man-in-the-middle attackers to spoof servers and obtain sensitive information via a crafted certificate chain.
The weakness was disclosed 04/30/2014 by Ryan Sleevi as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is shared at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2014-0363 since 12/05/2013. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1211 for this issue.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 79939 (Fedora 20 : smack-3.2.2-6.fc20 (2014-16383)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 123149 (Fedora Security Update for smack (FEDORA-2015-0046)).
Upgrading to version 3.2.2 eliminates this vulnerability.
