Details
A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in Debian dpkg up to 1.16.2. This affects an unknown code block. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. This is going to have an impact on integrity. The summary by CVE is:
Directory traversal vulnerability in the unpacking functionality in dpkg before 1.15.9, 1.16.x before 1.16.13, and 1.17.x before 1.17.8 allows remote attackers to write arbitrary files via a crafted source package, related to "C-style filename quoting."
The weakness was presented 04/30/2014 by Jakub Wilk (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at ubuntu.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2014-0471 since 12/19/2013. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation.
