Details
A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Novell openSUSE 11.4/12.3/13.1 (Operating System). This vulnerability affects an unknown code of the file nrpe.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a incomplete blacklist vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-184. The product implements a protection mechanism that relies on a list of inputs (or properties of inputs) that are not allowed by policy or otherwise require other action to neutralize before additional processing takes place, but the list is incomplete, leading to resultant weaknesses. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
** DISPUTED ** Incomplete blacklist vulnerability in nrpe.c in Nagios Remote Plugin Executor (NRPE) 2.15 and earlier allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary commands via a newline character in the -a option to libexec/check_nrpe. NOTE: this issue is disputed by multiple parties. It has been reported that the vendor allows newlines as "expected behavior." Also, this issue can only occur when the administrator enables the "dont_blame_nrpe" option in nrpe.conf despite the "HIGH security risk" warning within the comments.
The weakness was presented 05/07/2014 by Dawid Golunski as not defined mailinglist post (oss-sec). The advisory is available at seclists.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2014-2913 since 04/18/2014. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details and also a public exploit are known. This vulnerability is assigned to T1562.006 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
